About Us
My name is Louise James, and I qualified at the British School of Osteopathy in 1993. Before this, I did a Cellular Biology degree and took a certificate in Physical Recreation for the Community in Holloway, London, and the BAWLA qualification enabling me to become a gym instructor.
In 1984 I started working as a gym instructor with an interest in rehabilitation under the guidance of a physiotherapist, and took a qualification with the Swedish Massage institute, building a massage practice an also providing personal training sessions in clients homes.
I continued providing mobile PT and massage sessions throughout my 4 years of osteopathic training , and then started working in Tonbridge Kent in 1993 when I qualified.
In the early years I worked alongside other osteopaths and in multidisciplinary clinics, whilst building a practice in East Peckham on the outskirts of Tonbridge, eventually being able to work entirely in my own practice by 1999.
I taught as a Clinic Tutor at the European School of Osteopathy ( now the BCNO Group) from 1999 in general clinic, and then as a Children s Clinic tutor. I also ran OsteoMAP demonstration Clinics for 4th year undergraduates showcasing this unique approach for the management of persistent pain.
In 2022 I took a qualification to teach Hanna Somatic Movement which I integrate into my practice/rehabilitation advice.
In 2023 I relocated to Bristol to start a practice there, whilst continuing to work in Tonbridge 4 days every 2 weeks. I am current building the Bristol practice, so have lots of availability there!

Louise works here whenever she is not in Kent, in a lovely Log Cabin on the property. Online booking or booking via messaging me on WhatsApp on 07852 950464 is available for this clinic, but please WhatsApp message me on 07852 950464 if you have any questions or want to know if treatment is for you. I will contact you as soon as I have a moment!

TONBRIDGE CLINIC
Louise works in the Tonbridge Practice Sunday to Wednesdays on alternate weeks. It is within Piper s Business Centre, 220 Vale Road, Tonbridge, Kent, TN9 1SP. As this is a very established and heavily booked clinic, booking is only available by contacting Louise, leaving a message on WhatsApp 07852 950464 or emailing brislingtonosteopaths@gmail.com.
There are two fantastic assistants here too. Sarah Jane Marshall works on Wednesdays, and Ellie Gibson on Thursdays.
Both of them generally have good availability and you can book them on line, or book in by WhatsApp messaging Louise on 07852 950464.

HOW DO I WORK?
I use deep soft tissue work targeting muscles and shortened dysfunctional fascia ( the connective tissue running throughout muscle and investing into ligaments joints and bone). Many Rolfing courses with Tom Meyers attended early in my career along with skills learned from Swedish massage make for an effective combination when working with very chronic problems, and with athletes. Osteopathic long and short lever articulation and Harmonic technique provide a gentler approach. I regularly use gentle but powerful functional unwinding and Cranial Osteopathy.
Having practiced Mindfulness for 35 years and studied ACT ( acceptance and commitment therapy) as part of my OsteoMAP training, recognising the connection between mind and body during treatment is vital. It allows the realisation of how our thoughts, experiences and trauma change the shape and function of the body, and improves tissue response by being able to choose to let unhelpful patterns go to take your body in a new direction. This option can be included in any treatment or we can stick to a purely biomechanical approach.
With many years of experience in rehabilitation, I can recommend restorative exercises and Somatic movement to support your recovery. Having been a gym user for 43 years and training for Bodybuilding in the 80 s to Powerlifting ( bench press) over the last 10 years, I have an understanding of functional mechanics necessary for injury free lifting.
Helping post fracture recovery, complicated orthopaedic interventions, and returning patients to best possible function after medical surgery has always been an interest of mine. I have been fortunate enough to have done much of this work in the past.
2 years ago I became a Head and Neck Patient, and had radical surgery for jaw cancer, involving metalwork and grafting bone and skin from my leg, followed by 6 weeks of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This has given me much first hand experience of the issues involved with this level of medical intervention, and the used of Mindfulness, ACT and physical rehabilitation required to help treatment and recovery. I am keen to use what I have learned to help others on the same path.
I am experienced in treating babies, children and adolescents, also greatly enjoying my time as a Children s Clinic Tutor at the European School of Osteopathy in Kent ( now part of the BCNO Group). As my practice in Kent became progressively more heavily booked, I saw fewer babies and younger children as they tended to require more immediate treatment, and my assistants saw the majority of cases. With a new practice in Bristol, I look forward to being able to do more of this work again.

Sarah-Jane Marshall
Sarah-Jane studied at the European School Of Osteopathy in Maidstone and graduated nearly 35 years ago. Since graduating she has worked in various private practices including Sevenoaks, Burwash, Sidcup, Twickenham, Meopham and Dartford. Having had time out to have a family Sarah-Jane is returning to practice life closer to home.
She works with a breadth of patients and uses a range of techniques ranging from structural to cranial – all suitable to the needs of the individuals she treats.
She has been working in Osteopathic Education for nearly 30 years gaining a PG Certificate in Higher Education at The University of Greenwich. Currently she is the Head of Clinical Education at The European School of Osteopathy and has also held roles as Programme Leader, Clinic Tutor, BSc Assessor and Moderator, MSc mentor and assessor. She has also been an External Moderator and assessor at The London School of Osteopathy and Oxford Brookes and External Examiner at Marjon School of Osteopathy.
Sarah-Jane is excited to be returning to work in the area where she has lived all her life. As a member of Sevenoaks Hockey Club Sarah-Jane is currently managing teams within the senior section and coaching juniors. She also enjoys travelling – though that has been on hold recently along with spending time with her family.

YOUR TREATMENT
You will need 1 hour for your first New Patient appointment. After this you could have either half hour follow up appointments, 1 hr follow up appointments, or possibly a mixture depending on need, convenience and cost.
Expect soft tissue work, stretching and articulation, some clicking techniques when needed, gentle listening techniques and Cranial Osteopathy as some of the treatment options. Advice on lifestyle, nutrition and stress management along with exercises may also be given. Louise also uses Somatics exercises, gym/training specific advice for general training, strongman, bodybuilding and powerlifting, and mindfulness based techniques.
1 hour follow ups are best when you have a number of different issues to tie together during the treatment, and allowing time for exploring the mind/body connection, teaching rehabilitation exercises, or maybe some Mindfulness practice exercises for management of difficult thoughts, feelings or pain. The session will feel unhurried with plenty of time for collaboration and exploration of your needs.
Half hour follow ups are more suitable for more straight forward single problems, but there is still the time for provision of simple exercises and other management techniques.
Ideally being able to undress to underwear is optimal for seeing spinal and joint mechanics, skin and muscle tone, but understandably, some of us may find that a bit daunting. Sports shorts and a singlet can be worn to give a bit more cover, but it s all negotiable, as we just want you to feel secure and comfortable. It is possible to treat with more clothing on, but there are also covers available to help you feel a bit more secure (and warmer!). We try to keep the rooms at a comfortable temperature using heaters and fans, depending on the time of year.
In Bristol, my log cabin has a toilet and sink for patient's use, whilst in Tonbridge, as an office within a building , there are separate men s and women s toilets.
Both buildings are wheelchair accessible.
Prices
New Patient consultation £80
1 Hour Follow Up £80
1/2 hour Follow Up £50
GETTING THERE
The Tonbridge practise is an 8 minute walk from Tonbridge British Rail Station. There is free parking at the back of the business centre, which is well lit with a couple of disabled spaces. Ramps can be used to get wheelchairs in and out, and the treatment room and toilets are on the ground floor.
In Bristol, the treatment room is accessed down the side of my house with level access, using small ramps to get over the threshold if needed. There is one free parking space on the drive, and there are 2 parking bays on the main road about 30 meters from the house. The number 1, 36 and 61 buses stop almost immediately outside the house in both directions. The number 1 bus also stops outside Bristol Temple Meads Station.
